Portfolio return for January 2008

January 2008 had been an extremely volatile month as far as the equity markets were concerned. My portfolio is down a hefty 3.72% for the month, but it could have been worse since at one point (right around 1/23), I noted a fall of as much as 6%. It recovered slighly at the end of the month.

As for the individual asset classes, it can be observed from the figure below that most of them exhibit swings of more than 10% in the month. And except for US REITs (VGSIX) and PMEs (Precious Metals and Mining Equity VGPMX) which ended the month flat, the rest of the asset classes were down by 6% or more in January.

Portfolio movements (mostly due to rebalancing):

  • Purchased: US L, US S, INT L, INT EM, INT S.
  • Sold: US REITs, PME, fixed income (to finance the purchases)

My asset allocation, as of the 1/31/2008 is as follows:

How did you come up with your bench mark number in the 1st chart?

      Thanks,

CI, it’s a 50/50 mix of Vanguard LifeStrategy Growth and LifeStrategy Moderate Growth. The blend is approximately 70/30 (equity/bond).
