In January 2009, my portfolio lost 8.5% while that of my benchmark, a 50:50 split between the Vanguard LifeStrategy Moderate Growth fund and the Vanguard LifeStrategy Gowth fund, lost only around 7.2%. This can be attributed to the relative outperformance of US LargeCaps, which is a huge component in the benchmark.

This is a really late post so I will just keep it short. My portfolio gained 6.38% in December 2008. However, this is small comfort since the portfolio lost a whopping 28.2% for the entire year.
